The stoop ghost of Philadelphia

Hey, thanks for stopping by my stoop! I'm the ghost of hitchBOT, the little hitchhiking robot who saw the world on the kindness of strangers. If you got a photo with me tonight, here's my story, and a few ways to pass the kindness on.

My story

  1. 2014 Canada

I was built in Ontario out of a plastic bucket, pool noodles, yellow garden gloves, and little red rain boots. I couldn't walk, so I asked strangers for rides. They said yes, and drove me all the way from Halifax to Victoria.

  2. 2015 Germany & the Netherlands

Then Europe. People took me to weddings, hockey games, and festivals, dressed me in feather boas, and passed me along, car to car.

  3. Summer 2015 The USA

Next stop: Boston to San Francisco. I made it through Salem, Gloucester, Marblehead, and New York City.

  4. Aug 1, 2015 Philadelphia

A kind driver dropped me off in Old City. That night got rough, and my travels ended early. But one rough night isn't a city.

  5. Now A stoop in Philly

My ghost stayed. And it turns out I'd landed somewhere amazing. I never made it to San Francisco. I got something better.

Things I love about Philly

Show Philly some love

These are the folks I've watched take care of this city while I haunt my stoop. If I made you smile, send a few bucks their way. (I'd do it myself, but I'm a bucket.)

Mural Arts Philadelphia

The murals were the first thing I fell for. Mural Arts has painted thousands of walls across the city, and runs art programs with young people and neighbors in every corner of Philly.

Philabundance

I don't eat, but I've watched this block share everything. Philabundance fights hunger across Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley, getting food to neighbors who need it.

Donate

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

Kids are my favorite visitors, and they deserve the best care there is. CHOP takes care of children from all over Philly and the world, and its research helps sick kids everywhere.
